- Got Landing Papers but want to renew my passport
Q: I received my landing papers a while back. My
current passport expires in July 2000 & I have
to enter canada before May 2000. I want to renew
my passport while I am in US. I will get a new
passport which will have a new number ( I will
also get back old passport which will be marked
canceled). Will this create any problems at the
landing time??
A: I would not recommend applying for a new passport
until after you have landed if you can avoid this.
While most immigration officers at ports of entry
will amend an immigrant visa accordingly, some will
not and this could create problems.

- Opening a Bank account from overseas
Q: I already have my immigration visa, i plan to
move over to BC on the next spring but i've been
searching and searching in my country and i
haven't found any canadian bank branch here,
only representative offices in the Capital of my
country (Bogota, Im in Cali). Is there any way to
open an account in Canada from overseas or should
i take my money with me? (anyway it is not
going to be more than $12.000 canadian currency)
A: It is typically difficult to open a bank account
when not physically present. You will need to get in
touch with a bank in the region of your intended
residence in order to obtain the necessary documentation
in advance. Not all banks are willing to open accounts
without the applicant present, however.
FYI: there are indeed many new immigrants openned their
bank account from overseas. Some of them did via the
website of the bank. Links to the major banks in Canada
may be obtained here

- Bring in car bought in europe
Q: I know we can bring our properties when landing at the first time arrive in
Canada. What about the good i.e. Car , that we bought in Europe?
A: Unless the car you bought in Europe was specifically
built for use in Canada or the United States, it cannot
be imported into Canada, when you immigrate here.
The exception would be if the car is at least 15 years
old.
All cars imported to Canada must meet Canadian Motor
Vehicle Safety standards. Cars manufactured for use
in Canada do meet them, and have a Transport Canada
compliance sticker to show this.
Since US standards are very similar to Canadian standards.
Most US cars can be imported to Canada with minor
modifications made to them (daytime running lights, bilingual
labelling, a notice on the dash that the odometer reads in miles
instead of kilometres). Transport Canada has a list of cars
BUILT TO US STANDARDS which can be imported to Canada, at:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importation/pcl/search.asp
If your car meets Transport Canada's, then it must be
processed through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.
Their website is at:
